When you look into the face of an orphaned and vulnerable child at the Children’s Centre in Makindu, you see both pain and hope. The children are made especially vulnerable by poverty, and families are weakened by HIV and AIDS. Makindu gives them hope by providing nutritional, educational, medical and emotional support to meet their basic needs.

Share your love with Makindu’s children to fight back against HIV/AIDS Dear Friends, Makindu Children’s Centre currently serves 1,800 of the 1.1 million children in Kenya left orphaned and vulnerable by the AIDS pandemic. Since the inception of the program in 1998, nine of our children have died from HIV/AIDS. Mwasya died of AIDS at the age of 6, and was ever mischievous, joking and smiling, and always with a stubborn resolve. Despite his daily struggles, this kiddo was truly happy, with an infectious giggle that could warm your heart in an instant. Wamuyu died just last year, after gracing us with her beautiful smile for 11 years. She was only 13. Their lives have left us with a remarkable legacy: to help motivate and propel efforts to prevent more children from dying.

Makindu Children’s Program continues to provide a safety net to hundreds of children, some HIV positive, by serving their basic needs. Currently, 113 children in our program are infected with HIV and receive anti-retroviral medications that have proven successful in prolonging life. They laugh, play and have joy in their lives. The children, guardian families and community also receive counseling and  education on HIV/AIDS which has helped to dramatically reduce the infection rate and stigma of this devastating disease.
