  • Marathon for Makindu - sore footed success

    Monday, October 12th, 2009

Team Makindu finished in fine style last Sunday (Oct 4th) at the Portland Marathon and though Pheidippides, the first “marathoner” would have left us in his dust, we both had personal bests! (But of course it was the first time either of us had attempted a marathon.) Anita Amborsini (from Roseburg, OR) and Steve Randolph (of Portland) breezed through the 26.2 mile course that wound through downtown Portland, out Hwy 30 to the St. John’s neighborhood, along the University bluffs above the Willamette River down to the Broadway Bridge for the last stretch back to where we began downtown. It was enjoyable (mostly in retrospect) and a daunting challenge. We walked to celebrate the accomplishments of the Makindu Children’s Center and the lives of the many children served these past ten years. We very much appreciate the support of the donors who generously gave to honor our walk to honor the children of Makindu.

Thanks. Asante sana. It looks like the event will clear $3000 !!

  • Marathon for Makindu Kids

    Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Jambo! As you probably know, since 2002, we have done a biannual fundraising walk - a “Proper Walk” - in the northern Kenya bush. (see www.properwalk.com). The Walks are 10 days and cover 150 to 170 miles, complete with camels to carry the warm beer for the end of the day. This is an off year, so Team Makindu is walking in the Portland Marathon on October 4 and we are seeking pledges/donations to support the work of the Center -giving hope to the kids and the community. An anonumous donor has pledged a match for Marathon Walk donations.

If you are interested in pledging or donating, you can email smrandolph52@yahoo.com. You can donate on line - type Portland Walk in the “in honor of” space.
    Asante
